Meeting with a Customer

I have worked with numerous customers as an internal consultant at BellSouth and now externally with companies both large and small. My mission is to provide my customers with data and reports that support their decision making ability. As one CEO stated: "I don't micro-manage, I micro-measure."

Meeting with QSM founder

Lawrence H. Putnam, Sr.

Keeping abreast of the latest technical advances within the software industry is a never-ending task. Continuous improvement of knowledge and skills is critical.  Through my exposure to many customer environments/project varieties, conference attendance, research, writing articles, and reading industry literature I am able to keep current on industry trends.

Bio: Jim Mayes provides onsite and remote consulting services for QSM Associates.  Previously, he worked for BellSouth in Atlanta, GA, and had over 27 years of service within the Information Technology organization.  Over the past eight years with BellSouth and as a consultant, he has been directly involved in the use of software metrics for project estimation, tracking, predictive analysis, data analysis, trending, benchmarking, process improvement, function point analysis, outsourcing metrics, and productivity measurement.  At Bellsouth he gained experience in software development and lifecycle management as a Systems Analyst, Software Development and Maintenance Manager, Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) Manager, and Software Estimation Metrics Group (SEMG) Manager.  This experience included in-house software development, management of a large-scale outsourced environment, and COTS integration for various disciplines such as Billing, Network Engineering/Provisioning, and Customer Support.  He helped establish a SEPG for CMM implementation at BellSouth, and initiated the SEMG project office functions there as well.

Most recently, Jim has been involved with providing productivity baselines for outsourcing contracts, successfully negotiating agreement for implementation of Service Level Agreements (SLA's), and supporting ongoing project office measurement functions.  In addition, he is providing valuable support information to IT decision makers, via quantitative software project estimation, vendor estimate validation, risk assessment, defect modeling, and project tracking for predictive analysis of results.

Jim has a BS degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a Certified Function Point Specialist (CFPS).  He has had numerous articles published and has spoken at conferences on the subjects of Software Metrics and Process Improvement.  He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society, the International Function Point Users Group (IFPUG), the Atlanta Quality Assurance Association (AQAA), and  the Atlanta SPIN.
